August 2006
In Memory of Professor Emeritus David J.
Bellis: Dr. Bellis was Professor of Public Administration,
and served as Department Chair until his retirement last year. A multi-talented man,
Dr. Bellis was known as an accomplished jazz musician, and twice elected
as a city councilman and mayor of Signal Hill, CA. When he was laid to rest on July 6, friends
and family commented on how he always strived to help others, from every
walk of life, to have a better life. Scholarship
donations may be made payable to CSUSB Foundation, with a note
written directly on the check: "Carroll Bellis Scholarship," and sent
to Director of Development, College of Business & Public
Administration, 5500 University Parkway, San Bernardino 92407.
The family and CBPA will host a reception near the
end of September 2006 on campus, so the campus community,
alumni, Public Administration advisory board, and students have the opportunity to
commemorate and celebrate "David -- the person, scholar, colleague,
teacher, mentor, and friend."
MBA for Executives: This program is designed for working professionals who hold key decision making positions within their organizations--people who aspire to become better managers and assume increased levels of responsibility. With the first class for the new cohort on September 20, 2006, enrollment by September 5 requires that you begin your application immediately. If you have decided that you wish to commit what it takes to earn the MBA, act now! From this website download the full brochure and application. If you have questions on admissions requirements or academic content, contact MBA Director Beth Flynn via email or at (909) 537-5703. Student profile: MPA student De'Ann Lanning was appointed Assistant to San Bernardino Mayor Pat Morris for Intergovernmental and Legislative Affairs in April. Previously she served effectively as Field Representative in the L.A. Office of Senator Dianne Feinstein. Dr. David Baker, Assistant Professor of Public Administration, said "She is a professional who will do good things for the Mayor while serving as a strong role model for CBPA students generally and Public Administration students in particular." What a great sport - you'll see her running the Mayor's Run on Route 66 between service on a variety of boards and councils that interface with the City. IIMA journals published by CBPA Professor: C. E. Tapie Rohm Jr., Professor of IDS and member of CSUSB's Faculty Senate Executive Committee and Statewide Senate, has held multiple key roles with the professional association International Information Management Association (IIMA). He serves as Executive Director and Customer Service of the IIMA and is Editor-in-Chief of its quarterly double-blind reviewed publications Journal of International Technology and Information Management and Communications of the IIMA. Communications are manuscripts presented at the IIMA yearly conference, this year--the 17th annual--to be held in New York in October. Dr. Rohm was named a 2004 Fellow of the IIMA. Visit the association's website at www.iima.org.
University's outstanding thesis: The Department of Public Administration announced that Michael Davidson’s MPA thesis “Institutional Structures for Equitable and Sustainable Water Resource Management in the Middle East” was selected as the 2006 CSUSB Outstanding Thesis/Project. It will be the University’s nominee for the Western Association of Graduate Schools Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award.
Tenure and promotion: Three outstanding contributors to the College were granted tenure and promotion to Associate Professor, effective September 1, 2006. Congratulations to Drs. Tony Coulson, Information and Decision Sciences; Eric Newman, Marketing; and Jake Zhu, Information and Decision Sciences. Congratulations to all three for their contributions in teaching, research, and service. Internships: The final internship numbers are in for last academic year, and again the College had about 250 students in internships. Most are paid, and all award 4 units of academic credit upon completion of the supervised course which consists of 150-200 hours in the organization. Faculty coordinators are available in every academic area of business and public administration so that managers can consult on the appropriate job description and student qualifications. Our students held internships in firms such as Dippin' Dots, ESRI, GE Transportation, Rogers Anderson Melody and Scott, Wilkin Guge Marketing, Soren McAdam Christenson LLP, SMG/Ontario Convention Center, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. If your organization is interested in setting up an internship for the Fall quarter, please contact the staff internship coordinator Angie Webb directly, or visit the website for further information. Fundraising priority: We are planning for both an immediate and a long-term campaign through which we will emphasize overall "college excellence." Excellence starts with being competitive in recruiting top faculty who share our passion for teaching, appreciation of applied research, and service. Anyone interested in contributing energy or funds to this cause is invited to call me or our Director of Development, Kerry Neal.
Taiwan Program: The College is launching its newest international activity -- the Taiwan Program. Program director Nancy Fu has been hired to provide an active and productive network for faculty, alumni, current students, and Taiwanese business leaders and universities, and to prepare documents in Chinese. An advisory board chaired by Dr. Kuan Chen oversees successful accomplishment of the mission. Members include MBA Finance alumnus David Kao, the dean, professors Otto Chang, Frank Lin, Rauf Kahn, and Tapie Rohm, and the student president of the Taiwan Student Association. In the Spring quarter, a brunch was held for current Taiwanese students (a few of these "Coyotes" are shown in the photo) to let them know about the program, and Southern California alumni were invited to a gathering where it was decided that activities to be completed soon are a Resume Book for employers and a directory of Taiwan CBPA alumni. At the end of this month, a CBPA delegation is going to Taiwan to visit six universities where various joint programs will be planned for CSUSB students and faculty, and to organize a dinner held to network alumni of the College. Business Alliance welcomes both new Coyote member SGM Ontario Convention Center and Downs Energy. The Ontario Convention Center of 225,000 square feet can accommodate small to mid-size conventions, tradeshows, exhibits, and meetings. As a fully integrated petroleum distributor, Downs Energy provides premium products and innovative solutions to help clients control costs, increase productivity, and maximize equipment performance. For more than 60 years they have provided fuel and oil products to thousands of businesses throughout Southern California. If you are crafting your new budget, please consider membership in the Business Alliance for networking and to support innovation in the College.
