Picture of dean BowermanFriends,
The Winter Quarter begins, bringing exciting developments in the College's history.   Each quarter our student enrollment is on the rise, and there are increased opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate  students.  It is in the international arena where I see the most development in the last couple of months.  Business and public administration students may study with partner institutions around the world this summer, with special emphasis in Fulda, Germany and Taiwan.
                                                                                                       Best wishes,

                                                 Karen Dill Bowerman, Dean

Picture of Randy Lally

In Memory of Public Administration graduate student Randy Lally:  Randy Lally, CSUSB alumni and current graduate student in  public administration, passed away in an auto accident December 25.  He served as a fleet manager at JB Hunt trucking in San Bernardino.  An energetic, likeable, quick‑witted professional, Randy’s desire to use his public administration education to serve his community fueled a quest for public office.  Randy ran for a seat on the San Bernardino City Council in November 2006. Although unsuccessful in his first attempt, he impressed many people with his ability to organize a good campaign with few resources.  He was known as a friendly, down-to-earth person keenly interested in how to contribute to improve the lives of ordinary people.  Additionally, his family reports he loved to coach baseball.  Fellow students and public administration faculty within the College of Business and Public Administration will remember Randy fondly.   The photo is courtesy of Sun Newspaper.

Message from Dr. Kuan Chen, M.D. and Chair of Taiwan Program Advisory Board
Dear Alumni, Students, Colleagues, and Friends,
Following this joyful holiday season, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy and Propsperous 2007.  Since we started the Taiwan Program in 2006, under the leadership of Dean Karen Bowerman and Advisory Board, especially the hard work of our program director Nancy Fu, several hundred students, alumni, and business leaders have joined our program.  Currently we are networking our school, students, alumni, faculty, and business community in the U.S. and Taiwan, for our mutual benefit.  We are also developing a cooperative education program for undergraduate and graduate students in Taiwan and the U.S.  Several scholarships have been offered to our students from our participating universities.  I am very pleased with our progress in this program.  Thank you for your continuing support and participation.
Sincerely, Kuan-Cheng Chen M.C. FACS
In the photo above, Dr. Chen is shown signing an MOU with the Founder of the Chinese Medical School and Dean Bowerman.

Dr. Frank Lin, Associate Dean for Graduate & International Programs reports that five full scholarships have been awarded for junior and senior students from California State University San Bernardino along with 25 other students from Harvard, University of Hawaii, Boston College, and University of South Carolina to attend 2007 Elite American Youth Leader Camp in Asia University, Taiwan (http://www.asia.edu.tw). The scholarship covers round-trip airfare, tuition and lodging expenses. Qualified participants will pay for living expenses and insurance in Taiwan. The mission of this summer camp is to foster elite American youth leaders by enriching their Asian experience. This 6-week program runs from July 1, 2007 to August 10, 2007. It covers Mandarin and culture, high-tech industry, and small-medium size companies in Taiwan. Participants are granted up to 8 course credits by Asia University, approved by Ministry of Education, Taiwan.

The Taiwan Program sponsors events for CSUSB Taiwanese students also.  Alumnus David Kao, a founder of Taiwanese Student Association, is now on the Board for the Taiwan Program. He recently shared experiences of his professional life with CSUSB Taiwanese students, including topics such as how to achieve academic goals, career goals, and how to apply for legal status for students wishing to stay in the U.S.  David Kao invited an attorney, David S.W. Fang, to address legal issues.  More than 40 students attended the meetings.  Taiwanese students may contact program director Nancy Fu for further information on CBPA's Taiwan Program.

CSUSB Palm Desert Campus:  Beta Alpha Psi and Accounting Association invite accounting firms and Coachella Valley students to attend their first annual "Meet the Firms" event on Friday, January 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Rogers Building - Student Union on campus.  Please confirm your attendance by email.

The Fast Pitch has been caught:  Congratulations to the winners of the CSUSB Student Fast Pitch competition:    VaNae Hamilton - Medical Software - 1st Place, $2,000; Anjela Boyd – E Commerce - 2nd Place, $1,000; Anil Kapoor – Genetic Testing - 3rd Place, $500.  These three students were among the top five finalists chosen from a field of 36 that made their fast pitch of an emerging business concept to an audience of over 500 people at the Spirit of the Entrepreneur Awards on November 15 at the Riverside Convention Center, with the audience members voting for the top 3 fast pitches.  Each student garnered considerable attention and respect from the audience members including a $5,000 investment offer made to our top finisher, VaNae Hamilton! The competition is offered by the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship to expose motivated students to the challenges and rewards of starting their own business.  The mission of the competition is to involve CSUSB students in the entrepreneurial process and to foster an environment that promotes the creation of new ventures.  Event sponsored by Enterprise Funding Corporation.

Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to sign up for an exciting course in Executive Leadership  where they can meet presidents and top managers every week!  The industries represented are varied so students are exposed to many perspectives of Executive Leadership.   Listen, learn, and dialog with each visiting professor.  The MGT 590D course is in this Winter session on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 to 11:50 a.m.  Guests are welcome, space permitting.  Contact Dean Bowerman.
