THE COLLEGE COMMUNIQUÉ - Dean's  update to the community

College of Business and Public Administration
California State University, San Bernardino

                                                                                                                                  October 2007
Dean Karen BowermanFriends,
Campus closures from fierce fires of Southern California have been fueled by winds of amazing ferocity.  Our best wishes are with the faculty and staff who have lost their homes.  Our beautiful campus has been the depository for much soot from the mountains we adjoin, and many tall, stately trees are gone.  These are times when we realize more profoundly than ever that we are indeed family - we are there to support each other.
                                                                                                      Best wishes,

                                                 Karen Dill Bowerman, Dean __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Exceeding College Excellence Fund Goals:   Don Baker, former president and COO of Stater Bros. Dr. Clifford Young, Professor of Public Administration, is working on the Innovation and Policy Analysis project funded by the Army Research Laboratory ($1.1M).  This projects seeks to assist the Department of Defense to find ways to enhance actionable intelligence in the battlefield.  Currently warfighters are frequently deprived of some useful existing data because of problems with classification, excessive concerns about information assurance, lack of inoperability of communication systems, and challenges in fusing data from multiple sources.

Information Assurance curriculum in our Information & Decision Science Department has been certified as mapping 100% to the Committee on Natural Security Systems (CNSS) National Standards 4011 and 4012.  In Boston, faculty members Drs. Tony Coulson, Jake Zhu, Walt Stewart and the dean received the official CNSS certificate at the Awards Ceremony of the 11th Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education.  The next step in the full certification process is establishment of a center on information assurance that will further integration in the curriculum from multiple teaching areas.

THE MEANING OF AN INTERNSHIP:  Audrey Cabrales is now a brand research strategist at Wilkin Guge Marketing in Claremont.  She recently told her internship story to the dean, who said "this is the potential of an internship that everyone should hear."  Audrey said:  "I was able to learn so much, be effective in my contributions, and get some real hands-on training.  Wilkin Guge ... has a full integrated brand strategy program, so I was able to see how all the components of marketing, research, PR, media, web, interactive, creative, and strategic branding all work together.  I was assigned to the market research department and worked under the Director of Marketing, Greg Timpany, who is also a CSUSB graduate. I participated in many projects such as creating useful industry intelligence research papers, proposal meetings and brain storming sessions, designing surveys, interpreting the data, and researching leads for new business.  It was a great opportunity to discover which part of marketing I really enjoyed and excelled in.  Receiving an internship at a marketing firm allowed me to use and apply just about all I have learned in the field of marketing.  Consumer behavior and demographic concepts I learned about in my consumer behavior courses were used daily.  The concepts of target market segment, Interactive and Multichannel Marketing, advertising, sales promotions, and public relations were all extremely relevant.

"The biggest lesson I learned, that I could not have learned in the classroom, was to take risks.  Stepping up to the plate by facing industry experts and executives and participating in new business presentations was intimidating.  I never could have learned or prepared for that feeling until I experienced it.  The risk of saying I can do that, even when you're not sure you can.
An internship allows you the opportunity to apply what you have learned in the real world and see if it works. I have loved watching my skills and concepts from school being useful in daily work tasks.  To see those around you saying and applying things you have heard about from the classroom is exciting.  It makes all the principles more real.

"I had an amazing experience through this internship.  I gained confidence, increased my qualifications, networked with amazing people, built relationships, and learned the importance of being a team player.  I have found my niche in marketing research and new business development.  The best part about this story is that I was able to make such an impression that Gail Guge and Wilkin Guge Marketing decided to hire me.  I am honored to be their Brand Research Specialist, and am excited about the opportunity to share and offer our uncommon marketing strategy to companies throughout the Inland Empire."

For information on College of Business & Public Administration internships, please contact our staff coordinator, Angie Webb at abecerri@csusb.edu.  Internships are not part-time jobs; they award meaningful academic credit for the work done.
