Jack H. Brown was the inaugural inductee into the College's Food Industry Entrepreneurs Hall of Fame on April 11. The Hall of Fame was developed by our Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship (IECE) to celebrate the pioneers of an industry with deep roots and history in Southern California. Jack Brown, Chairman and CEO of Stater Bros. Markets, is shown in the top photo with emcee Mayor Pat Morris. Mike Stull (bottom photo), IECE Director, said that each year, an entrepreneur that changed the face of the food industry will be inducted. Beyond honoring visionary entrepreneurs, the Food Industry Entrepreneurs Hall of Fame will serve as a source of information and case studies for use in classrooms, and successful role models for current and future students and faculty at CSUSB. Brown’s accomplishments are well documented as a visionary leader in southern California's food industry. Under his direction over the last 27 years, Stater Bros. Markets has grown from a small regional chain to a corporation with 164 locations, 19,000 employees and annual sales in excess of $3.7 billion. The company is one of the largest privately owned supermarket chains in the U.S. and was voted America’s Retailer of the Year in 2001 and 2004. A native of San Bernardino, Brown began his supermarket career as a box boy at Berk’s Market Spot in San Bernardino at age thirteen. His career of more than 50 years of service to the food industry has resulted in accomplishments that include the 2007 opening of Stater Bros. new 2.1 million square feet corporate offices and Norton distribution center. The all-under-one-roof distribution center utilizes energy-saving features such as 1,000 skylights in the dry distribution center. Stater Bros. Markets is the largest employer in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. |

We have been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education for academic years 2008-2013. This recognition, given by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency, places CSUSB among only four universities in California with this national distinction. Official letters of notification are being sent to the Governor, Members of Congress, and appropriate Congressional Committees. A ceremony will be held at an awards dinner on Wednesday, 4 June 2008 during the annual conference of the Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education held in Dallas. Shown here is Dr. Tony Coulson of the Information & Decision Sciences Department who gave oversight to this important two-year process. |

USA Today wrote: "The days when students had to trek across campus to get professors' help during office hours may go away. 'There is a tremendous advantage … especially when it expands on the potential for learning and allows students to access materials in different ways,' says Jillian Kinzie, associate director of the National Survey of Student Engagement. The annual survey has found that using information technology correlates with higher student-faculty interaction and is strongly associated with other measures of student engagement. ... Richard Lillie, assistant professor of accounting at California State University, San Bernardino, offers virtual office hours via Skype, a free program that allows users to make computer-to-computer phone calls. Lillie requires students to own a headset or microphone and a webcam. 'It's a one-on-one video call,' he says. 'Even though we're using technology, we can talk and work with each other as if we're sitting in the same office.' Lillie also uses SightSpeed, a video conferencing program, to record three-minute videos discussing students' work, which they can see by clicking on a link. ... Lillie says virtual office hours and other digital means of communication are the future of education. 'It's going to have significant ramifications. … We have to think, 'How can we really use these tools creatively to communicate and still guide the learning process?' " |

Merrill Lynch has launched a pilot internship program with the College. The program, planned over a 12-month period, is directed by Diane Valenzuela, VP and Branch Manager, Rancho Mirage. Phase 1 and 2 include specific internship training in client services, procedures and wire transfers, operations and compliance. Once this is successfully completed, the student must demonstrate appropriate knowledge and then apply for phase 3 as an assistant to the client teams, which includes a paper to be presented to both Ms. Valenzuela and Dr. Estes. As appropriate, some students may then be offered one of several career opportunities at Merrill Lynch related to their area of interest. (Already, several managers have approached Ms. Valenzuela and her supervisor to hire interns into career positions.) A similar Merrill Lynch program is in their corporate offices in New York, involving Ivy League universities in that region. |

"Thank you for the Communiqué update. As an alum that spent 10
years working for others and now in my 6th year on my own, it's great to read
about the next generation. It is good to see that future graduates will
have a greater understanding of what I believe are three basic fundamentals
of business: (1) Relationships matter; (2) Plan 3-5 years out at all
times (rolling planning process); and (3) Return phone calls (pretty basic
but still missing)!" |
