Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Job creation is more important than ever, as the I.E. experiences a net job loss in 2008 for the first time in over 40 years. The housing market's effect is profound. As we graduate students for the workforce, the College remains committed to economic development at the same time. There are many important pieces to that puzzle, and one is increasing exports from the region. This year's National District Export Council Conference is being held in Palm Springs October 15-17; hear leaders in world trade to help guide your export plan. Hope to see you there! Again, I focus on the fact that WE GRADUATE COMMUNITY LEADERS. It's not too late to set up an internship with our students for the Fall Quarter, so give us a call if we can be of assistance. Our interns are prepared for community leadership because of your mentorship. ~Karen Dill Bowerman |
STUDENTS WIN INFO COMPETITION: Near the end of the Spring Quarter, two CSUSB teams competed in Pomona's12th annual Information Technology Competition, sponsored by the Information Assurance and Security Management Center. Our Systems Analysis team won first place for their case design for a fictitious aerospace knowledge management and secure search system. The team was required to document and communicate the business needs of clients into an effective enterprise solution. Multi-disciplinary team members Alfredo Gonzales, Andrew Shaw and Abhay Sharma divided a $1000 cash prize. "The most important outcome is that the students learned a lot in a high pressure competition,” said faculty coach Dr. Jake Zhu. |

ECONOMIC IMPACT: In four short years of operation, the IEWBC has achieved $6.5 million in economic impact and assisted in the creation and retention of 278 jobs. Assistance includes business counseling to 959 clients for a total of 4,194 hours, entrepreneurial training for 5,262 participants, and the facilitation of mentoring for 1,047 women. Approximately 91% of the clients of the IEWBC in all programs have been socially or economically disadvantaged and 70% of the workshop attendees (1457 out of 2109) of the IEWBC in all programs have been socially or economically disadvantaged. The Inland Empire Women's Business Center received a $100,000 grant for providing services to low-income, minority, disabled and/or women-owned businesses. Wells Fargo Foundation recognized the small business assistance program with a $50,000 grant in 2008 and another $50,000 for 2009, contingent upon the organization making successful progress in goals outlined in the original proposal. The Center offers an array of low-cost workshops to help business owners advance their potential for success at any stage of business development. |
| College alumna JEAN STEPHENS, Chief Executive Officer of RSM International, addressed the graduating class of the university's College of Business and Public Administration at its 2008 commencement ceremony. She holds the MBA in Finance from the College and became the first woman to lead RSM International, a global network of independent professional services firms, ranked seventh in the world in terms of size, with 66 member firms and 25,000 total staff in 64 countries. During commencement weekend, students from our nationally-ranked Beta Alpha Psi organization held a dinner in her honor, and bestowed honorary membership. Before beginning international work, Jean Stephens held leadership positions in the San Bernardino Chamber of Commerce (president - 1995), Rotary International, United Way (treasurer), YWCA (president 1992 – 1995) and the Inland Empire Symphony (VP finance).
Thank you, Jean, for flying in from the U.K. to address our graduates!

DON DROST’s service to the University, the College, and the Management Department has been long term and thus led to his recognition by the College for the 2008 Service Award. We are all indebted to Dr. Drost as Associate Dean five years ago when he handled much accreditation-related reporting. He has served on literally tens of committees over the years to keep faculty governance meaningful, such as the Outcomes Assessment Committee to evaluate and "close the loop" on continuous improvement of our undergraduate program. |
OUTSTANDING GRADUATES of 2008 were MPA student Scott Catlett and undergraduate accounting and finance (dual) major Christine Gibson. Both graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA (there were only three 4.0 GPAs among over 600 graduates). Scott Catlett maintained a full time position as principal management analyst for the City of Riverside. Prior to enrolling at CSUSB, Scott was halfway completed with his degree at Tulane University in New Orleans until as a result of Hurricane Katrina, he relocated to the Inland Empire. Christine Gibson is beginning her career with KPMG after graduating with dual B.S. As a presidential scholar, Christine has been involved with the University and in the community. For the past six years she has volunteered with the City of Readers program in San Bernardino, and served for three years in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Christine Gibson is shown in the center, with Dean Bowerman and RSM International CEO Jean Stephens. Scott Catlett, CBPA's 2008 Outstanding Graduate Student, is shown with President Karnig. |

Three years ago, Alumni Affairs researched all addressable alumni of the College to find the percentage that had remained in San Bernardino and Riverside counties over the last 40 years. The figure was 62%. Figures shown here from one class alone would lead us to believe that the percentage remaining here in the I.E. has grown by 10-11% to about 73%. Whether or not those grads will still be here ten years from now remains to be seen, for example, when they believe their careers could be given a shot upward if they moved to another county. Alternatively, these grads may remain in the two-county area because there is a viable career path to sustain their professional growth, and housing is relatively affordable. Time will tell. But whether the percentage is 62% or 73%, the point remains the same: the College is educating future leaders of the Inland Empire for business and government.

Bonnie O'Connor, the College's Director of Development, says DONORS MAKE A DIFFERENCE…donations to provide scholarships, student awards, and to fund innovative programs help to enhance the learning environment for our students. The margin of excellence at great universities is private support, not reliance on only public funds. As CSUSB continues to offer the highest quality undergraduate and graduate level education, we remain an educational leader in Southern California. Community support is vital to our providing strong leadership for the long-term economic vitality of our region. You can make a difference in the life of a student and create a lasting legacy. To learn more about our programs, new initiatives, scholarships, and events, please contact Bonnie O’Connor at (909) 537-7295, or via e-mail. We would be happy to send you a packet of information on CBPA and the ways that you can make a difference. |
