November 2005
A
personal highlight of early November was visiting several universities
in Taiwan, each with an interest in expanding its relationship with
CSUSB's College of Business and Public Administration. Some wish
to focus
on expansion of student and faculty exchanges, while others ask for
expanded MOUs that lead in a variety of directions including support of
import/export in the Inland Empire. These global academic
partnerships are explored at a time that coincides with expanded
international community partnerships. The Inland Empire International Business
Association (IEIBA), Arrowhead Credit Union, Verizon, and other community partners will
discuss "The New IEIBA
- Exploring Foreign Markets Seminar" at a luncheon to be held on Tuesday, December 6 at 11 a.m.
For further information, give me a call.
Best
wishes, Karen Dill Bowerman,
Dean
Bank
of America's Christi Gordon (right)
presented the Inland Empire Center for
Entrepreneurship (IECE) with a Big Check of
$70,000 for development of the Coachella Valley
Women’s Business Center (CVWBC). The CVWBC
will be an extension of one of IECE's many successful
community outreach and small business assistance
programs, the Inland Empire Women’s Business
Center (WBC). The purpose of the program
extension is to deliver more services to
existing and aspiring women-owned businesses in
the desert area with a focus on expanding
outreach and services to low to moderate-income
women. While women business owners are the
primary target market of the WBC, all its
services are accessible for any business owner
or aspiring business regardless of gender,
ethnicity, etc. (Shown with Ms. Gordon is
Dean Karen Bowerman, Senator Bob Dutton, and
IECE Director Mike Stull.)
As reported in September, IECE was designated
the recipient of funding for an “Integrated Technology Transfer Network"
(ITTN) in cooperation with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory.
Subsequently, ITTN received additional funding to create and administer an entrepreneurial focused workshop
for the Army Lab scientists so that they would
know the information on entrepreneurship and business that the students
will receive before we send them to the U.S. Army Research Lab for the
final phase of the ITTN project. Mike Stull and Monica Brule went
to Washington D. C. in late October to conduct the workshop.
Sign up here for the
Spirit of Entrepreneur Dinner
(Spirit Awards)! This Black Tie Optional event
will be held Wednesday November 16 at the Riverside Convention Center.
If you have not previously attended this outstanding event that
recognizes many entrepreneurs in our region, this is a good year in
which to begin!
STUDENT PROFILE: Candice Tsegga, a
senior with a dual concentration in Finance and Real Estate, returned
this quarter from an opportunity-filled Washington D.C. internship
through CSUSB's affiliation with the Hispanic Assn of Colleges and
Universities. Candice worked full time at the Financial Management
Service, a bureau within the Dept of Treasury. There she was
a member of the Account Analysis Team where she assisted with both
paying monthly expenses and managing the cash management system.
Candice was reared in the Inland Empire and after graduation dreams now of
earning an MBA from the Univ of Pennsylvania. Opportunities such
as this change an undergraduate's horizons, even for a well-traveled
student: "It was an opportunity for networking, touring sites of
historical significance, and better understanding the government's role
in monetary practice." During this academic year, she is a student
assistant in CBPA's Institute of Applied Research.
TAIWAN ALUMNI: Associate Dean Otto Chang (2nd from left,
front) and Dean Bowerman (center, front row) visited about 25 CBPA
alumni in Taipei who gathered to re-connect with each other and hear
about the campus during its 40th year anniversary [click on picture to
expand size]. The deans attended the Knowledge-Based Economy and
Global Education Conference in Tainan and also visited several
universities interested in developing or expanding MOUs with the College
for faculty and student exchanges, as well as offering dual degrees for
students who completed substantial coursework on both campuses.
NO. 1 COLLEGE MAJOR:
Based on the number of college freshman
who are making it their career choice,
accounting is the new 'sexy' (so they
say!) college major. Yes, accounting.
Accounting is now the most in-demand major on college
campuses, according to both AccountingWeb.com and the Job Outlook 2005
survey, conducted by the National
Association of Colleges and Employers. AccountingWeb.com
cites these statistics from the Wall Street Journal: The
number of accounting degrees awarded nationwide in 2003 jumped 11
percent from 2002. As a reflection of demand, next year you will
see an MSA (Master of Science in Accountancy) added to the curriculum. For more
information,
contact the department chair. There's
a major challenge on the horizon in terms of meeting student demand: According to the American Accounting
Association, there are more than twice as
many faculty openings as there are
applicants. The top 10 most in-demand college majors
include five engineering programs and the
following five business administration
concentrations (CSUSB offers all):
- Accounting
- Business administration / management

- Economics / finance
- Marketing
- Information sciences and systems

INTERNSHIPS: My prediction as Dean is
that you will become increasingly pleased with our CBPA Internship
Program as it unfolds. Our staff coordinator, Angie Webb, has
established a new program office in JB 105 with a warm and welcoming
ambiance. She can be reached
by email or at (909) 537-3581 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through
Friday if you wish to list an opening for a CBPA student. Angie
will refer you to the appropriate faculty coordinator within CBPA,
depending on the nature of the job to be done. The Business
Alliance Board has committed to support the Internship Program this year
by funding some "release time" from teaching for five faculty
coordinators. Students working in the Internship Office will soon
make available an online program presence that will simplify both
listing (for organizations) and registering (for students). This
Communiqué will of course announce when that exciting program
development is available. CBPA currently has 250 student interns
in the field in every area of business and public administration.
