December 2004
As
the new dean of Cal State San Bernardino's College of Business and Public
Administration (CBPA), I thank you for such a hearty welcome to the
community. I invite you to rediscover with me
how CBPA excels. From our stakeholders I have learned
that great strength is realized in our profound concern for being a
student-centered learning community that focuses on learning as opposed
to teaching -- a subtle but important difference. A strong link
from Cal State's applied business program to area organizations is
essential for CBPA to meet its mission. The College's
mission guides us into the community in
order to achieve our purpose and to provide students with opportunities
for application of business and public administration principles. Please call me at (909)
880-5700 any time with ideas on how we can better serve our students or
surrounding communities. Meanwhile, I'll write an occasional
email to help us stay in touch.
Best wishes for a very Happy New Year!
Karen Dill Bowerman
Save the Dates: CBPA's
Speaker Series on Goods Movement is a three-part conference to be held
the Friday mornings of March 18, May 6, and May 27. The
Arrowhead Distinguished Executive Award luncheon is scheduled for
Tuesday, April 5 in Riverside.
I'll be sending you further details, but also you may
email or call (909) 880-7295
for further information on either event.
Newly-appointed members
of the Dean's Executive Advisory Board met in October for
the first quarterly meeting, and will
meet again on January 18. The Board helps direct strategic
priorities of the College such as establishing
a speaker series on Goods Movement to bring in persons who will address
technical issues, quality of life and the politics of logistics in the
Inland Empire. The Board will consider the College
development plan, and help tie strategic priorities to funding
priorities.
It
is my pleasure to announce that Billie Tribbett has begun serving
as the College's Director of Development. She comes to the College with years
of background as a stockbroker, and knows the Inland Empire well.
I am also pleased that Gina Molina has joined Billie as Public
Information assistant. You may already know Gina from her work in
CSUSB's central development office. Their positions are primarily
external, to keep the community informed on the College and its
development plan. An example of an exciting program for which they may be contacting you is our new Business Alliance. You may now
become a Founding Member of Business
Alliance, with the first annual fee carrying through to June 30,
2006! Benefits include networking with other community leaders,
developing programmatic ties with the Dean, College faculty or staff,
and student, and enjoying programs planned for members by the business and public
administration faculty. Benefits to the
College are many -- especially the many factors that improve from
linkages with you ranging from increased internships for our students to funds that
support the Dean's Action Plan.
Contact Billie to set up a time when we can visit.
Membership is available at the $1000 or Coyote $2500 level.
Economic Impact:
Cal State San Bernardino
contributes more than $500 million in expenditures to California’s
econom y each year, while also supporting more than 10,000 California
jobs and generating more than $28 million in state taxes, according
to a report commissioned by the CSU to
ICT Consulting of San Francisco.
The report also found that CSUSB
alumni earnings generate more than $635 million annually to the state
economy.
For every $1 the state invests in Cal State San Bernardino,
university-related expenditures generate $4.53 in additional spending.
As University President Albert Karnig stated. “Our challenge is to help
assure that there are local jobs that match the high skill levels of our
graduates. In fact, we’re working to promote the chances that our
graduates will live and work locally and help to build Inland
California’s overall level of productivity.”
CSUSB
is one of the fastest-growing universities in the CSU system, with total
student enrollment increasing nearly 25 percent over the past six years
to over 17,000 students. Of that total, the
College of Business and Public Administration serves 2,400 undergraduate
and 500 graduate students.
A new scholarship program
for incoming transfer students is announced. Recipients are selected
by the Dean based on meritorious academic record, leadership, and service. The
scholars receive $3500 per year for
two years (when excellent grades are maintained), and they are invited
to serve as Dean's Ambassadors. Stratham Homes
is sponsoring the first two such scholarships which are the largest
scholarships given directly by the College, and the only ones designated within
the College specifically for recruiting students from community
colleges. Students now graduating from community college and
entering CBPA in Fall 2005 may
apply online
for scholarships to be awarded in April 2005 for the Fall.
Commencement
on December 11 was a joyous occasion for CSUSB's 750 graduates.
Stater Bros. CEO Jack Brown shook hands with all graduates of the
College of Business and Public Administration as their names were
announced. Mr. Brown is shown in this photo with 37 year old
graduate Mark Seay who now works for Stater Bros. and is known for
having played wide receiver for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles and later
the San Diego Chargers in the team's only Super Bowl appearance.
Before the Fall Quarter
was underway, Cal State received word from AACSB, the premier national business
accreditation body, t hat
the College's acreditation was fully reaffirmed, with
no contingencies, for the maximum period of six years. In an
institution where teaching has top priority, this accomplishment
reflects balance of appropriate
levels of faculty research along with teaching and service. The
college was applauded as a public university for maintaining small class size
of only 28 students, on average, in concentration courses. You
read last year that the Public Administration program was again
accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and
Administration, so that reaffirms why the College is proud of its
program quality. It is no wonder that CSUSB has been labeled a "best
value" in higher education.
Glenda Bayless
returned to CBPA for the first Faculty Research Colloquium given by Rick
Lille, an accounting lecturer from our Palm Desert
Campus, on effective use of distance learning in teaching advanced
business courses. The seminar was held in the Bayless
Accounting and Research Laboratory, named because of funding provided
about ten years ago by Bayless' CPA firm. Lille and Bayless are
pictured here with Accounting Chair Dr. David Schalow. Students
and community members are invited to participate in faculty colloquia
(free of charge). Email for a
schedule.
