Public administration is concerned with the
design and execution of public policy at all levels of government.
That is, it is concerned with the quality of American life.
There are 89,000 governments in the U.S., 22 million people
working directly for the public sector, and approximately a
third of our national GDP is generated by public agencies.
Public administration is a large and vital contributor
to our national well-being.
The Department of Public Administration offers both a major
and a minor in public administration at the undergraduate level.
The master’s degree, the MPA, has a general management
focus which students can customize through their electives.
A Quick Glimpse of the Department
The Department is the only one in the Inland Empire accredited
by the National Association of Schools of Public Policy and
Affairs (NASPAA). The quality and experience of the faculty
is exceptional. The core faculty are distinctive in their
connection to the community and their scholarship. Faculty
have served in elected functions, governmental advisory boards,
and as executive officers in agencies, giving them “real world” insights. This
is augmented by highly accomplished adjunct faculty who help bring today’s
administrative world into the classroom. Some of the faculty also have national
reputations for scholarship in leadership and management. The Department
is increasingly offering online opportunities for students, especially at
the graduate level where all core classes are now available in virtual formats.
Additionally, the Advisory Board—composed of agency heads and senior
managers from across the region—ensures that the Department is well
connected in terms of contemporary needs and internships.
